Financing entitiesThis project is developed with the collaboration of Fundación Biodiversidad, the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, through the pleamar Program, co-financed by the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund, EMFF.

Description

The main objective is to promote the sustainability of the maritime aquaculture sector through the implementation of an innovative process of valorization of drift seaweeds through its transformation into biofuels that allow the obtaining of renewable energy.

EnergyLab's Tasks

EnergyLab will perform the following tasks:

  • To detail the current problem of drift seaweeds and to expand the end uses of an algae cleaning equipment previously developed.
  • To develop and validate specific processes for the energy recovery of algae through transformation into gaseous biofuel.
  • To evaluate the process of co-digestion of algae with other organic by-products of the sector, such as fish discards, to increase resource efficiency and generation of gaseous biofuel.
  • To develop and validate specific processes for the energy recovery of algae through transformation into solid biofuel.
  • To evaluate different mixtures of algae with biomass materials, to increase the efficiency of resources and the generation of solid biofuel.
  • To evaluate the economic viability of the implementation of the new processes and equipment in fish markets, ports and brotherhoods.
  • To promote and to disseminate the sustainable use of drift seaweeds among entities of the marine aquaculture sector
